Chairman’s report to the AGM for year ending ApriI 2006

Well this year I can say that it has been an honour to be elected as chairman for the past year, greatly helped by my fellow councillors, with as usual the highest praise going to our clerk Mike Fraser who tirelessly makes our task very easy.

Without doubt our greatest achievement of the year was the establishment of our parish council website, giving our parishioners the opportunity to scrutinise everything we do on their behalf, hopefully by reading the meeting agendas beforehand we will get even more interested souls to our meetings, fully armed with valuable information posted on the website.

The next most controversial topic of conversation we had to deal with was the continuing onslaught of applications by the Trail Riders Federation, leading to a well attended meeting in Poyntington Village hall, with our MP Oliver Letwin as guest speaker.

It was nice to see the footway between Castleton Way and the Gryphon School completed.

Locally we made available two grants. One to Obome Village Hall towards floor repairs and to Poyntington Village hail committee towards the maintenance of the play area.

We as a council have been writing to the DCC, fully supported by County Councillor Legg to try and control speeding vehicles along the A30 in Obome.

A Housing Needs Survey was conducted in conjunction with the Rural Housing Advisor for West Dorset and revealed that there was a limited demand for more affordable housing in the area. The new Local Planning Framework provides for some relaxation of the rules covering development in villages without Defined Development Boundaries, we as a Council can do nothing until clear evidence of demand is brought to our attention. The Survey Report is posted in full on the council’s website.

We dealt with 30 planning applications during the year, of which 2 went to appeal following refusal of permission by West Dorset District Council.

We are all sorry to have lost councillor Karin Limer and wish her a successful relocation. I hope that her successor will be as enthusiastic.
